Things We Are Learning:

Reader’s Workshop- We are tying up the loose ends in Reader’s Workshop!  We will finish our teaching posters on Monday. These are posters that the students are creating based on a concept from the Scholastic News article about government.  We will also complete an end-of-the-year spelling assessment.  The students will also tackle their last Scholastic News magazine with main idea activities to follow.  All students are expected to read each night for thirty minutes.

Writer’s Workshop-   We will be using our Writer’s Workshop time to complete an end-of-the-year writing piece assessment.  We will also be working on an audio stories website in the computer lab on Thursday.   Please encourage your student to write in his/her Writer’s Notebook at home, as it will be assigned for homework.

Spelling- Weekly spelling tests will be given each Friday.  Please encourage your student to identify weekly Spelling words on everyday items at home! There will be 5 challenge words included in each weekly Spelling list.  These are difficult words included from our Math, Science or Social Studies curriculum that the students can strive to learn and memorize to increase their vocabulary.  These words are bonus words, not mandatory.   SPELLING TESTS ARE DONE FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR.  EXCELLENT JOB, BOYS AND GIRLS!!!!

Science- Our ecocolumns have all been taken home.  If you have taken some of our critters, we hope they are still alive!  This week, we will finish our study of the human body by completing the reading in the text and also making life-size systems posters.  We will also complete a lab on measuring matter.   Wednesday is computer lab day.

Social Studies- “The People of New York” will be our last unit of study.  The students will be learning about jobs, arts and recreational sports in New York.  We will finish our products and services collages, as well.  Our “I Love NY! Day”  is Monday, June 23rd from 8:30am-12:30pm.  If you are available to come in and help we could really use as many hands as possible!  Please jot me a note to let me know that you are available to help.  Please arrive at school at 8:45am-9:00am if you are helping.  If you are donating items, please send those in by Thursday, June 19th.   Thanks again for all your help!

Math-   With our busy schedule last week, we were not able to start our “Olympic Round-Up” stations activity.  The students will work in teams to complete different Math “Olympic” activities.  Thursday is Math board game day.   On Wednesday, the students will take their last timed test.

Mrs. Engelhardt’s 4th Grade Weekly Times

Things We Are Learning:

Reader’s Workshop- This week in Reader’s Workshop, we will continue to work on synthesizing information.  We will be tying in our study of history and government as we read the article, “The Constitution and You.”   The students will work in groups to complete their teaching posters.  Each group has been a concept from our article and has generated main idea sentences and illustrations that they will use to teach their classmates.  On Tuesday, we will be using our Reader’s Workshop time to prepare for our concert.  All students are expected to read each night for thirty minutes.

Writer’s Workshop-   Our Writer’s Workshop time will be used for Science for this week.

SPELLING IS DONE FOR THIS SCHOOL YEAR!

Science- As is with many scientific experiments, we had some unexpected happenings with our ecocolumns!  Many of our isopods and crickets did not make it, so we’re concluding our study of ecosystems.  The students have one more reading assignment on acid rain left.  If your student would like to take home any part of his or her ecosystem, PLEASE WRITE ME A NOTE GIVING THEM PERMISSION AND PLAN TO PICK UP THE CRITTERS BY TUESDAY, JUNE 10TH.  We are no longer able to send home any living creatures on the bus, so they will need to be picked up here at

school.  This week, we will be studying the circulatory system, nervous system and the

eyes, tongue and nose.  We will be going to the computer lab on Tuesday and Thursday to work on interactive websites on the body.  The students did an outstanding job on their solar system power points.  We will be sharing our power points as learning tools with our 1st grade sister class, Mrs.Guntert’s friends!

Social Studies- Our field trip to the capital and museum went VERY WELL!  The students did an outstanding job and really showed excellent behavior for a very long day of activities.  This week, we will finish up our study of the national government.  We will also be learning about Flag Day and the history of Father’s Day.  I Love NY! Day will be June 23rd.  This will be a fantastic culmination to our study of New York and a super help in preparing the students for the 5th grade SS assessment.  We could use all the helping hands we can get.  If you are available to help, please write Mrs.E a note to let her know that she can count on you to be there.  Please consider coming in to help!  J

Math-   We will be Rounding Olympians this week in Math!  The students will take part in exciting activities that will have them up and out of their seats all week this week.  On Monday, we will do a review of rounding.  For the rest of the week, the students will be working in teams to complete “Rounding Olympics” activities.  They will not only complete the Olympic events, but also calculate their score and their team score.  Ask your student if rounding always helped him or her in the quest for Olympic gold!
