KINDERGARTEN NEWS
Week of May 19 – May 23
Themes: Parts of a Story, Money, Plants, Alphabet Countdown
Literacy Centers: We’re moving along with our vowels – this week is the long and short sounds of e. Our new sight word is “they” which we have already met briefly when reading our “Seeds” book. The children will enjoy practicing all of their sight words with BINGO and stamping them using alphabet sponges and paint! They will make a Flowers Make a Rainbow book to help reinforce number and color words. In honor of Alphabet Countdown week, the children will imagine what ANIMAL they could be on Tuesday and write their sight words BACKWARDS on Wednesday.
Writer’s Workshop: The next focus is story parts. The children will be encouraged to write a fiction piece with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Mini lessons will instruct what needs to be included in each part.
Math: The quarter will be introduced, along with review of the dime, nickel, and penny. Our school store is in full swing! Many thanks for the food containers. We are all set.
Science: The ducks are due to hatch in about a week. The children saw movement during our last candling, which was very exciting! Otherwise, we are continuing with labs in the Liquids and Solids unit and we will learn what plants need.
Announcements: No School on Friday, May 23rd.
The children have earned a party for receiving compliments from others and me. This Wednesday, the children may wear their PJ’s, perhaps backwards for Backwards Day?! We will watch a half hour movie and munch on popcorn. Please remember sneakers are needed for gym.
This Thursday, May 22, our class will help with Spruce Up Day by weeding in the front garden and spreading mulch.
