RCS is looking to formalize its
response to students in need of
academic intervention before the
students end of being classified as
in need of special education
services.
In a wide-ranging report to the
Board of Education on Jan. 7,
Committee on Special Education
Chairperson Elaine Dykeman also said she plans
to submit for their consideration a
proposed policy on the district's
assistance to struggling students.
The Response To Intervention (RTI)
Policy would outline how RCS
provides academic assistance to
students suspected of having a
learning disability before they are
classified as a special education
student.
The basic components of the proposed
policy and the RTI process will
include:
-
Scientific, research based core
instruction in reading and
mathematics
-
Screening three times a year for
all students in kindergarten
through grade 5 to identify
those who are not making
academic progress at expected
rates.
-
Researched-based interventions
matched to the student's needs
that increase as needed.
-
Screening administration at the
completion of the intervention.
The policy will also detail
components of the district and
school personnel responsible for
overseeing and administering the
policy and intervention for
students.
