Second `town hall' style night draws crowd, recommendations

RCS Superintendent Vicki Wright and members of the Board of Education conducted the second "town hall" style meeting Thursday in Selkirk as a crowd of approximately 20 district residents asked questions about the status of the district.

The crowd of RCS parents and residents asked the superintendent and board members about everything from how she was working to address the vote of no confidence against district administration and the Board of Education taken last fall by the Teachers Association to what students in grades kindergarten through four can do in terms of fundraising activities.

Besides Wright, Board of Education President Mike Varney and Vice President Cindi Elliott addressed resident questions as did board members John Vadney and Jeff Sorensen as well as A.W. Becker Principal Claudia Verga, high school teacher and Dean Bryan Wood and Communications Coordinator Mike McCagg.

Other questions included what is the district doing to address “hot points” from last school year, what is RCS doing to increase community confidence in the district; why did Interim Business Administrator Gene Grasso resign and can interim Grades 9/10 Principal Dr. Frank Barone stay beyond the end of the school year.

The residents also mixed praise into their questions and criticisms, complimenting Superintendent Wright and the board for conducting the town hall style meetings – which they characterized as informal and informative; as well praising the positive attention the district receives in the Albany media.

Questions posed at the meeting will be answered fully by Superintendent Wright in very near future on the district website – www.rcscsd.org.

She said the district will conduct additional town hall style meetings in the future, with dates and locations to be announced in the coming weeks.

Board member Vadney said he was pleased with the meeting.

"They are a continuing effort of the board to further promote the inclusion of the members of this community as part of our Educational team," Vadney said.
