Student
initiative
spurs
district-wide
‘green’
effort
The RCS
school
district
will
begin a
recycling
program
in all
four
schools
in the
coming
weeks.
RCS
Facilities
Director
Gene
Doane
told the
Board of
Education
on
Monday
that the
popularity
of a
white
paper
recycling
program
in the
high
school -
sponsored
by the
National
Honor
Society
- and a
similar
initiative
sponsored
at
Pieter
B.
Coeymans
sponsored
by the
Habitat
Club -
led to
the
decision
to start
a
district-wide
program.
Doane
said he
met
Monday
with
representative
of Cross
Refuse
in
Selkirk
and they
will
deliver
a
dumpster
to the
high
school
next
week.
Bins
will be
placed
in all
approximately
200
classrooms
in the
district
as soon
as they
are
delivered
from the
manufacturer.
Custodial
staff
will
collect
the
paper
and
cardboard
at all
four
schools
and
bring it
back to
the main
collection
point at
the high
school.
"It
should
be a
pretty
smooth
start-up,"
he said.
Superintendent
Vicki
Wright
on
Tuesday
said
praised
the
district's
students
for the
initiative
and
Doane
for
responding
so
quickly
to the
obvious
desire
of our
students
to be
more
"eco-friendly."
