Students at
A.W. Becker Elementary
School will be putting on their
dancing shoes later this month – but they won’t be dancing to
the sounds of Kanye West, 50 Cent or Rob Thomas.
Rather the
students will be waltzing, doing the rhumba
and other
ballroom dances to the sounds of Big Band and other early and
mid-20th century artists.
The school
will host a Community Ballroom Dance on March 27, from 7-8:30
p.m. to allow the approximately three-dozen students who have
learned ball room dancing as part of a program to showcase their
talents.
The event is
open to the public and adults are
encouraged
to attend to dance alongside the students, organizers said.
Students who
take part in A.W. Becker’s ballroom dance program meet twice a
week after school to learn dances ranging from the foxtrot to
the rhumba, jitterbug, cha-cha and waltz.
The program is designed to help young students gain poise and
grace as well as encourage teamwork and coordination.
“The dance program is unique that the structure of this
opportunity will empower our students in so many ways throughout
their life,” said Board of Education member John Vadney,
whose
son, Joshua, is a participant in the program.
