In the
wake of
a
February
28 media
report
that a
significant
amount
of
mercury
has been
released
into the
air from
the
LaFarge
plant,
the
Board of
Education's
Buildings
and
Grounds
Committee
asked
company
representatives
to
conduct
air and
surface
tests
for
mercury.
Superintendent
Vicki
Wright
additionally
asked a
company
representative
during a
meeting
for
written
assurances
of the
safety
of
students,
faculty
and
staff.
“Good
neighbors
do the
right
thing,"
said
board
member
John
Vadney.
LaFarge
Cement
is
located
across
Route 9W
from the
middle
and high
school
campus,
which
houses
approximately
1,200
students
each
school
day, as
well as
hundreds
of
faculty
and
staff.
Vadney
said the
board
wants to
make
sure
that
faculty
and
staff is
safer
and not
being
exposed
to high
levels
of the
pollutant.
"I would
expect
that
Lafarge
would
have had
enough
time to
at least
remedy
the
request.
.. .A
good
neighbor
would
want to
know
what
they are
putting
out and
how it
impacts
us,"
said
Vadney.
"We need
this
testing,"
he said.
