Doppler isn't
just for meteorologists.

Teacher
Scott Holdren talks about the Doppler
Effect. |
RCS High School
students gathered around a driveway on campus on
Monday to watch science teacher Scott Holdren
demonstrate the Doppler Effect from atop his Honda
Gold Wing motorcycle.
There wasn't a
"Fonzie" leather coat, but there were several
'ayyys" as students caught onto the effect changes
in direction and relative speed have on the observed
frequency (pitch).
The Doppler Effect,
Holdren said, is the change
to a wave - pitch for sound, color for light - when
the object emitting the wave is moving. Real world
applications include Doppler Weather Radar,
Astronomy studies of which way the star is moving
and how fast, police speed guns, etc.
