RCS scientists to compete in state competition Saturday

Balloon launch, road scholars, among the competitions

RCS Middle School student scientists are busy preparing for this weekend’s  state Science Olympiad competition in New Paltz.

The students will compete in New Paltz on April 11 and 12 against 35-40 of the best Science Olympiad teams from across the state.

During the regional Olympiad competition conducted at RCS Middle School last month, the team earned the right to advance to the state competition, along with Goff Middle School from East Greenbush and Roxbury Middle School.

RCS Midde School Teacher Jen Fisk, who advises the RCS team, said students have been staying after school until 5 p.m. every day for the  last month in preparation for this weekend’s competition.

“The students studied for the events, built and refined technology devices. After school, we worked on events, obtained materials, created resources, and the students met with their partners to figure out where their weaknesses were in each event,” team advisor and coach Jen Fisk said.

Competing this weekend for RCS are:

·         James Buono

·         Trey Coryell

·         Mary Doane

·         Alex Demitraszek

·         Jessica Russ

·         Christy Holodook

·         Kylie Julian

·         Shannon Killar

·         Matt Nooney

·         Elaine Peasley

·         David Peasley II

·         Elizabeth Quasnick

·         Morgan Searles

·         Katie Simons

·         Natalie Smith

·         Austin Snyder

·         Maisie Snyder

Fisk, who not only coaches the RCS team but also serves as regional coordinator for the Olympiad and organized the regional Olympiad, said the competition is very stressful for the students, but brings out the best of  them.

“The competition is full of a lot of pressure. All of the kids have put a lot of heart and soul into their events. It is not unusual to see some tears from competitors during the day,” she said.

The benefit of the work and dedication is a true understanding of science, Ms. Fisk said.

“Real science and technology is conducted through meetings, presentations, peer review, and severe competition where the winner gains a patent, discovery, or society improving breakthrough,” she said. “That’s why competitions like this are so important.”

Seventh grade student Jessica Russ – who was busy Wednesday putting the touches ion a plane that will be part of her entry in the  balloon launch competition - said she enjoys the stress of the competition.

“I like being here and having fun. The competition makes you feel smart,” she said.
