RCS in period of transition; superintendent change
on the horizon
The Board of Education on Monday approved an
addendum agreement to Superintendent Vicki Wright’s
contract and voted upon its option to discontinue
the employment relationship by no later than June
30, 2009.
Wright, who has been with the district since 2003,
will remain actively employed as the District’s
Superintendent until June 30, 2008. Thereafter, she
will be paid her salary and benefits through the
2008-09 school year or until she begins employment
with another district. Wright is scheduled to earn
$146,419 next year.
“It was mutually agreed upon by the board and Ms.
Wright that this action represents the best option
for the district and for her,” said board President
Mike Varney. ”We have great respect for much of what
Ms. Wright has accomplished through her tenure at
RCS. That said we believe it is time to move in a
new direction.”
Wright has overseen a period of great change in RCS,
including the 2005 completion of a major capital
project that brought additions to the elementary and
high school, as well as passage last October of a
$2.35 million, largely state-funded capital
improvement project. Her initiatives on an
out-of-school suspension program and the institution
of a pre-9th grade program have been
successful in assisting students at risk to stay on
track for graduation. In addition, her leadership
has resulted in the first-ever five year RCSTA
contract using an interest-based negotiations model.
Wright is well known for her strong curricular and
instruction background which has assisted in closing
the achievement gap and increasing student
achievement throughout RCS, Varney said.
The Board of Education is working to identify and
hire an interim superintendent to begin work on July
1, Varney said. A search for a permanent successor
will begin in the late-spring or summer.
