Elementary students to mark Earth Day

Students in grades 3-5 will celebrate Earth Day on Tuesday with song,  discussion on what they can do to save the Earth, and awards for the best Trash To Treasure sculptures.

The celebration will serve as a precursor of sorts for a Wednesday event in which two elementary classes will join a group of high school students and a representative of the Audubon Society in releasing approximately 80 trout into a stream off state Route 396.

The Tuesday event will begin at 2 p.m. at A.W. Becker Elementary School with an assembly., During the assembly, students will sing an environmentally themed song - Agents of Change, as well as a song, Save the Earth,

Additionally, students will perform a skit entitled Be Responsible, lead a discussion on personal responsibility and the environment and learn about how they can help save the Earth.

Finally, the school's Environmental Club will hand out awards for students who crated the best sculptures and art work using items found in the trash. Dozens of students took part in the month-long contest.

On Wednesday, students in two elementary school classes are scheduled to travel with students in a University in High School science class to a state Route 396 location near the convergence of the Onesquethaw and Coeymans creeks in Bethlehem.

Once there, they will - with the assistance of the Audubon Society - release approximately 80 trout that have been raised by students this year in classroom trout farms. That event is expected to take place at approximately 1 p.m., teacher Krysia Cording said.
