Elementary running club trains
with guidance of world champion boxer
It's one thing to
run hard when a physical education teacher asks you too.
It’s entirely different when the WBE Welterweight Boxing
Champion is offering the directive with encouragement.
The latter is the
case for 35 A.W. Becker Elementary School students who
training before school three times a week to take part in
the Freihofer’s kid’s mile run on May 31.
The students,
members of the Wackadoodles Running Club, are being aided in
their training regiment by Liz Mooney, winner of the WBE
Welterweight Class championship belt during a fight last
winter.
Mooney – whose
son, Seamus, is a member of the club – joins physical
education teacher Cheryl Morenz and others in training the
students most Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays on the
playground or in the gymnasium of the A.W. Becker Elementary
School. The students train from 8:15 a.m. to 9 a.m., when
the school day begins.
This past Monday,
Mooney joined in the training regiment after completing a
12-hour shift as a registered nurse. She is expected to
attend this Friday’s training session.
During the
training students sprint, jog and perform calisthenics as
well as learn proper breathing and running techniques.
