Science Olympiad competition
yields learning opportunity, awards
A
pair of eighth grade students earned third place
honors and several other RCS Middle School students
performed well during the state Science Olympiad
competition last month.

advisor and middle school science teacher Jen Fisk
said veteran Science Olympiad competitors
Katie Simons and Natalie Smith,
both of whom are in the eighth grade, earned a third
place in the Car of Tomorrow competition in state
event.
Their vehicle completed
the course and missed first place by 0.2 seconds,
according to the judge who used a stop watch to time
the event, Fisk said.
The April 11-12
competition in New Paltz featured the best 39 middle
school Science Olympiad teams across the state
competing in events designed to test the scientific
limits of students.
RCS students who placed
in the top 25, as well as the event they competed
in, are:

place Oceanography: Alex Demitraszek and
Maisie Snyder, both 8th graders.

12th
place, Meteorology: Trey Coryell and Maisie
Snyder , in the 7th and 8th
grade respectively.

14th
place, Reach for the Stars: Katie Simons and
Maisie Snyder, both 8th graders.

16th
place, Science Crime Buster: Katie Simons
and Natalie Smith

17th
place, Balloon Launched Glider: Kylie Julian
and Jessica Gruss, both seventh grade
students.

19th
place, Trajectory: Mary Doane and Christy
Holodook, both in the 8th grade.

20th
place, Road Scholar: Trey Coryell and
Austin Snyder, both in 7th grade.

22nd
place, Amphibians and Reptiles: Kylie
Julian and Elaine Quasnick, seventh
and eighth grade students.
