Students in A.W. Becker
Elementary School's Young Scholars Program are "hitting
the trail" - so to speak.

Young Scholar students take
meteorological readings on the nature trail
outside the school. |
With the assistance of STAR
volunteer and naturalist Norm Fanchler, the students
have staked claims to nine-square-foot plots of land on
the district's nature trail are weekly gathering data
from the plots to learn about nature and the
environment.
On a recent outing, a trio
of girls noticed with Fanchler that the inhabitants of a
large ant hill on their plot had cleared the vegetation
off off the top of the hill to allow for more
sunlight and warmth.
The students are recording
in a journal visual observations of the change in the
land form week to week, as well as air
temperature, wind direction, cloud formation, animal
tracks left behind, landscape changes and more, Young
Scholars Teacher Debra Neubart said.
The observations
began earlier this month and will continue through the
end of June, she said.
