Senior musicians at RCS recently reaped the rewards
for years of hard work and dedication to the craft.
Several honors, recognitions and scholarships were
presented during a recent ceremony at the school,
said Music Teacher Scott Andrews.
Awards and
scholarships presented were:
The Greene County Music Educators Association (GCMEA)
Scholarship –
Jason Gallagher ($350) tie for second place
A
record 12 students from the GCMEA schools auditioned
for the scholarship this year. Typically only one
scholarship is bestowed, but three were recognized
this year. Gallagher, who plays the piano, received
a $350 scholarship after tying for second place,
Andrews reported.
Kleinsteuber
Award for Excellence in Music –
Three
recipients: Jason Gallagher, Christopher Parker and
Kristin Sterling ($300 each)
Given by the Craig D. Thompson family in memory of
Mr. Thompson’s uncle, Charles J. Kleinsteuber, a
harpist. There is usually one award given per
year. With the abundance of musical talent in the
Class of 2008 it was difficult to select only one
recipient. Through the generosity of Mr. Thompson,
three awards were made possible for our student
musicians, Andrews reported.
Luciano Polverelli Instrumental Music Award
– Two
recipients: Anna Downey and Gregory Russ ($100 each)
Given in memory of Luciano Polverelli, who died in
1954. Awarded to a graduating RCS student who has
made a significant contribution to the instrumental
music program. The student must be currently active
in the band program at the time of graduation and
must demonstrate an exceptional level of
accomplishment in musical performance.
Other significant areas considered include active
involvement in school band activities which include
co-curricular ensembles, all-county and state level
music festivals as well as exceptional qualities of
musical leadership, citizenship and service to the
music department. This award is usually presented
to one student, however, through the generosity of
Mr. John “Chick” Pape and Mr. Joseph Campoli, two
awards were made possible this year.
United States Marine Corps League of Albany County
Semper Fidelis Music Scholarship Program –
Jason Gallagher ($100)
Made available to music students from schools
throughout Albany County and awarded through teacher
recommendation and an audition in front of a
certified adjudicator. Three awards were given this
year to students from Shaker High School,
Guilderland High School and RCS.
