RCS High School senior receives
courage award
RCS High School senior,
Katie Knowles, will be one of the recipients of the 2010
Student Courage Award. This award is presented at Siena
College by the Martin Luther King, Jr. & Coretta Scott
King Lecture Series on Race and Nonviolent Social
Change.
Katie was nominated for
the award because of her commitment to making the school
community more caring and appreciative of the diversity
that defines RCS. Katie demonstrated her commitment to
ending discrimination through her work as an NCBI
Diversity Trainer and as a supporter and founding member
of the school's GSA.
"She has truly been a
tireless champion of acceptance," says Jessica Doerr,
RCS HS Social Worker. I often hear her say, 'Because she
is a human being!' or 'How do you think it would feel if
someone said that about you?' She is truly brave in her
commitment to stopping discrimination and has really
made a positive impact on many of her peers,
particularly underclassmen."
Katie will be honored at
Siena College on April 7, 2010, where she will be
presented the first place award and $500. She will also
attend a special lecture and reception for Dr. Charles
Ogletree who is the director of the Institute for Race
and Justice at Harvard Law School.
"I am excited and honored
that Katie asked me to be her guest." adds Doerr. "I am
also proud that, thanks to Katie, RCS will hold the
highest honor of all area high schools at this important
event!
