Introduction
This
booklet of information provides parents and students detailed information on
the various student clubs and organizations at the Middle School. Student clubs
and organizations afford the students the opportunity to become more involved
in school activities. Please contact the advisor of the club or organization
for additional information not provided in this publication.
ART CLUB I
Art Club I
is a club for 6th grade students. The club provides opportunities
for members to work on creative, in-depth projects while making some new
friends at school this year.
Some of the projects members may become involved in are such
things as displays, exhibits, contests of local and statewide problem solving
(The Olympics of the Visual Arts), and mini-lessons (sculpture, weaving, crafts
and seasonal projects).
We may select five students from the middle school to
prepare an art portfolio for an opportunity to participate in a statewide
portfolio evaluation (The NYSATA Portfolio Project). Members of this club will
receive information about this and all projects available to participate in
this year at the meetings.

ART CLUB II
Art Club II is for 7th and 8th graders.
It engages students in a variety of activities including assisting with mural
or drama club needs of the school, learning about different types of drawing,
painting and crafts, and exploring individual interests that cannot be covered
during the course of the regular art classes. Membership is limited due to the nature
of the program.

The Drama
Club selects, by audition, all students in grades 6-8 who would like to
participate in a play or musical production. In addition to preparing for the
production, rehearsals will include acting games and discussions about various
theater related topics. Rehearsals will be more frequent during the two weeks
preceding the performances. There will be at least 3 performances of the show. Information
that is more detailed will be available in the fall.

FCCLA (FAMILY, CAREER,
and COMMUNITY LEADERS OF
Family, Career and Community Leaders
of America (FCCLA) is a national youth leadership organization. The
organization's goals are to help young men and women (grades 6 - 12) assume
active roles in society with emphasis on personal growth, leadership
development, family life, career preparation, and active community service. Active
members have the opportunity to run for and hold local, regional, state and
national offices, to compete in regional, state and national STAR Events
competition and to attend local, state and national leadership conferences.
FCCLA is affiliated with the
National and State Associations. To participate in regional, state, and
national activities members must attend after school meetings. Members conduct
business meetings; work on community service projects and STAR Events projects.
Members may take the 4:50 PM bus home. FCCLA information is posted on the FCCLA
bulletin board outside of Room #120. If you want to develop leadership skills,
help others (young and old), make new friends, have an opportunity to travel
and have fun, this is the organization for you!

FRENCH CLUB
Seventh and eighth grade
students who are taking French IA or French IB are invited to join the French
Club! Students participate in a variety of activities which will include: learning about the French-speaking countries
(i.e. France, Canada, Polynesian Islands, Africa), sing Holiday songs, make
Holiday cards, watch French movies, eat French cuisine, organize the annual
Hawaiian Spring Fling Dance and “Le Jour du Bowling” (Bowling Day). Students
may also have the opportunity to travel to Montreal/Quebec,

This club is open to all
students in grades 6-8. The club will offer students the opportunity to learn
aspects of hiking that will make their hikes safe and enjoyable. Over the
course of the year, students will learn about map reading, nutrition, first
aid, equipment, and the possible dangers associated with hiking.

Intramurals is open to all
students in grades 6-8. It allows students the ability to participate in
additional physical activity. Students will increase cardio-vascular fitness,
develop sportsmanship, and increase self-esteem. Student participation each day
is limited to 30 girls and 30 boys per the respective grade level. (See below
for the grade level meeting times.)

The Middle School Jazz Ensemble is a select ensemble
open to instrumental music students in grades 6 through 8 by audition only.
Students who have experience on saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, drum set,
bass guitar or electric guitar are welcome to audition. The group explores
music from the areas of jazz, swing, Latin, bebop, pop, and rock and consists
of approximately 18-25 members. Auditions are held during the first week in
October.
Select ensemble concerts are held twice a year,
usually in January and May, and other school and community performance
opportunities may be scheduled throughout the year.

MATH CLUB
This club is opened to all
students in grades 6-8. The Math Club offers enrichment activities in
mathematics for any student who wishes to attend. It offers the students a fun
and exciting environment for mathematics. The Math Club also provides the
students with an opportunity to improve problem solving skills and social
skills.

Natural Helpers is a group
of students dedicated to helping their peers and community. One of their main
roles in the Middle School is to help mediate student conflicts. Natural
Helpers is nationally recognized as an effective peer-helping program. Students
are nominated by their peers to participate in the program

Reporters, artists, and
photographers are needed to assist in creating the bi-weekly publication of
“R-C-S Kids News.” Students in grades 6-8 are encouraged to join.

The Photography Club is open
to all students in grades 6-8. The students will use cameras as a tool in one
of the six modes of visual learning---exploring, recording, communicating,
expressing, motivating, and imaging. In addition, photography is a language,
and a valuable visual record. Like the written word, photography has its own
vocabulary and its own grammar. The students will learn and apply some basic photography
principles as members of this club. Students will learn how to make a pinhole
camera. They will gain an understanding of the value of photography as a modern
art form. Please note students may have film and developing costs in this club.

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
SELECT CHORUS
Select Chorus is offered by
audition to all chorus students in grades 6-8. It provides students an
opportunity to sing a variety of challenging music in a small ensemble. There
are generally 24 students selected. Concerts are also involved. Due to the limited
amount of rehearsal time, attendance is very important for each singer.
Information that is more detailed will be available at the beginning of the
school year.

SPANISH CLUB
The purpose of the Spanish
Club is to develop an appreciation of the Spanish language and culture through
fun, hands-on activities. Students may be involved in Hispanic holiday
celebrations, Hispanic craft sessions, and holiday singing with the French
Club.

The Stamp Club is open to
all students in grades 6-8. Members of this club will become involved in
philatelic activities (the art of stamp collecting). As a philatelist, each new
member will learn how to create an archival quality stamp album. Some students
may already have a stamp collection to begin to organize. Members will be able
to decide what types of stamps they wish to collect, USPS stamps or
international stamps from different countries around the world.
Some activities will include
ways to remove cancelled stamps from envelopes, types of papers to use to mount
stamps, how to display stamps and go to stamp exhibitions, how to research the
value of stamps, where to research stamp origins, how to use catalogs and local
postal services and philatelic centers as informational resources.
At club meetings, members
will meet some community members who have been stamp collecting for many years.
There will be opportunities to trade stamps or to buy and sell stamps. Members
will be able to receive information about newly released stamps and first
editions. There will be opportunities to display and present YOUR stamp
collection at meetings. At the last meeting of the year, members may bring
guests to view and display stamp collections at an Annual Stamp Expo.

Krebs
The Stock Market Club is
open to all 8th grade students. It is a 10-week computer simulation
of Wall Street trading played on the internet. Students are placed in teams of
two or three and are given an imaginary $100,000 to invest in common stocks. Students
learn about investments and lessons for life. The club integrates math/reading,
social studies, language arts, and computer skills. There are two 10-week games
played. One will be played in the fall and one in the spring.

Student Council is open to
all students in grades 6-8. This group works on individual projects to make our
school community a better place. The group also sponsors and organizes the student
activity nights and dances for the school. Student Council Officers and
Homeroom Representatives meet weekly. The entire Student Council meets once a
month.

TV/MULTI-MEDIA PRODUCTION CLUB
This club is open to all
students in grades 6-8. The students in the club will be involved in learning
how to combine video and computer graphic imagery using video, film, movie, and
animation techniques. The members of the club may select from projects such as
documentaries, animation sequences, movie special effects, and informational
films. Members will learn what technologies are available to make creative
projects and multi-media presentations.
There may be some
opportunities for students to enter work in electronic media exhibits and
statewide competitions. Special work on projects will require staying beyond
tenth period. After basic informational meetings, all members will work in
assigned TV crews. Each crew will meet as needed after 10th period
with Ms. Vatalaro to work on special projects.

students in grades 6-8. Students involved in this club will have the
opportunity to become involved with all aspects of yearbook production from
page layout to sales. If you like to take pictures, are creative, and like to
write and edit pieces of information, this is the club for you!
