(May 12, 2011) Stars Intergen Inc., a nonprofit
organization in Glenmont that provides intergenerational programming for the
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District and senior adults in the community,
has received a $750 grant from Stewart’s 2010 Holiday Match Program.
The grant will be used to benefit the Star Helpers Program, which brings
middle and high school students to the Van Allen Senior Apartments in
Glenmont to interact with senior adults who serve as their mentors. The
students and senior mentors do homework together, play games, team up on
crafts and community service activities and go on educational field trips
together. The grant will underwrite costs associated with healthy snacks,
crafts and an end-of-year field trip for the students and their senior
mentors on the Dutch Apple Cruises.
Stars Intergen Inc. is recruiting additional senior (STARS) volunteers to
help out in Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk elementary and middle school classrooms
for fall 2011. The agency also is recruiting senior volunteers who would
like to mentor high school students by helping them navigate the college
search and application process.
