(Dec.
29) The Pieter B. Coeyman's Fifth Grade Student Council collected spare
change throughout December to raise money for the Regional Food Bank of
NENY. The Change to Make a Change initiative raised $1,647 through in-school
donations. To supplement the effort, the student council participated in the
Holiday Hunger Appeal at Crossgates Mall, where they raised an additional
$1,602, for a grand total of $3,249.
According to the Regional Food Bank, they can distribute $10 worth of food for every dollar they spend. The Change to Make Change donation will enable the food bank to provide more than $30,000 worth of of food to families in need. That equates to approximately 18,750 pounds of food, or $14,423 meals. $3,000 can also allow 18 students to participate in the food bank's Back Pack Program, which provides children in need with backpacks filled with food each weekend, when school breakfast and lunch are not available.
The Regional Foodbank of NENY provides over 20 million pounds of food a year to 1,000 agencies in urban, rural and suburban communities in 23 counties.
