Four HS students selected to NYSSMA All-State Conference

Students selected for NYSSMA All-Conference(Sept. 15, 2011) The RCS Music Department is proud to announce the selection of four RCS High School students to participate in the 76th annual NY State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Winter Conference on Dec. 1-4, in Rochester, NY.

Javier Carrazana will play the trumpet in the All-State Symphonic Band, Abigail Cowan and Thomas Downey will participate in the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble, and Eugene Posniewski will participate in the All-State Mixed Chorus. Downey was also selected for the Mixed Chorus, but chose to participate in the Vocal Jazz Ensemble.

"It is a tremendous honor to be selected to participate with the most talented student musicians from all across New York State," said K-12 Music Coordinator and HS Band Director, Scott Andrews. "It is worth noting, that of the eight All-State performing ensembles at this conference, the instrumental and vocal jazz ensembles are the smallest in size. The vocal jazz ensemble consists of 24 voices. For RCS to have two of the 24 students selected from across the state to the vocal jazz ensemble is quite impressive."

Students were selected based on the results from their Spring NYSSMA solo performances, as well as other previous NYSSMA and musical experiences. Cowan, Downey and Posniewski are returning to the NYSSMA Conference for the second year in a row. Last year, Cowan and Posniewski were selected to the Mixed Chorus and Downey was selected to the Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Carrazana is participating for the first time.

Students will participate in hours of rehearsal beginning Thursday evening, Dec. 1. The three-part concert series begins Saturday, Dec. 3 at 4 p.m. with the All-State Vocal and Instrumental Jazz Ensembles. The second concert will be held on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m., and will feature the All-State Wind Ensemble, String Orchestra and Women’s Chorus. The third and final concert will take place on Sunday, Dec. 4 at 10 a.m., and will feature the All-State Mixed Chorus, Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra. All concerts are held in the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, home of the Eastman School of Music.

Congratulations to our talented music students!
