(May
5, 2012) On Tuesday, Feb. 28, third and fourth grade students from Pieter B.
Coeymans Elementary School came out with their families to enjoy an evening
of literacy celebration. The “Chocolate Indulgence” themed night focused on
grade-level appropriate literacy skills through fun, engaging hands on
activities.
Prior to the evening, the students were given one of the following books to read at home with a parent: The Chocolate Touch, Chocolate Fever, or Double Fudge. When they arrived at the event, the children completed a Story Web based on the book they read.
Children and parents then worked on grammar skills in the “Ooey Gooey S’mores” adjective activity. They followed written directions to make a literacy-themed iPod and chocolate mouse, hunted for chocolate facts and completed a chocolate web quest.
Mathematics was integrated into the evening with a Hershey’s-based math station where students worked on fractions, multiplication arrays, word problems and area and perimeter concepts.
To round out the evening, students enjoyed chocolate-dipped pretzels and marshmallows from our chocolate fountain, and listed books with chocolate themes that they would like to read as an extension to the evening’s activities. The evening was a collaborative effort of AIS reading and math teachers. Thank you to all who participated!
