RCS voters approve
2009-10 budget

On Tuesday, May 19, 2009, Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District residents approved the $42,464,808 budget for the 2009-10 school year. There were 668 "yes" votes and 459 "no" votes. This budget represents a 1.35 percent increase in spending over the current year’s budget and will result in an estimated 1.8 percent tax levy increase, the lowest in five years.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Michael Johnson said, "I believe this is a fair budget that meets the educational needs of our students and is sensitive to our taxpayers."

Three RCS volunteers honored by County
Executive Breslin

Three local retirees who volunteer in the RCS district
were among ten individuals honored by Albany County Executive Michael
Breslin at a ceremony on April 29, 2009. James Sutton of Selkirk, Nancy
Bruno of Coeymans and Marion Shields of Ravena each received the 2009
Executive Volunteer Award for years of community service in a variety of
activities. Shields, Sutton and Bruno all volunteer with the STARS
(Seniors Teaching and Reaching Out to Students) Program, which recruits
retirees to volunteer with elementary students in
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District classrooms.
RCS high school students bring Spanish and French stories to AWB and PBC

On April 30th, students from the University in the High School Program in Spanish 4 and French 4 and 5 visited A.W. Becker and Pieter B. Coeymans elementary schools to share the children’s stories they had written in Spanish and French with the students in first and second grades.
The high school students wrote and illustrated myths explaining how something came to be. They read these myths in Spanish or French, translated them into English, and then taught the elementary students how to say some of the relevant words in the story, and their names, in Spanish or French.
