A.W. Becker Wackadoodles put their training in motion

For the past seven weeks, 37 grade three, four and five students at A.W. Becker have been training to run the 32nd Annual Freihofer’s 1 Mile and 3K Kids Run, on Saturday, June 2. As part of the Wackadoodles Running Club, their training included coming to school early three days a week learn how to stretch, pace themselves and mentally prepare and endure distance running.

The Wackadoodles program was started by former RCS Physical Education Teacher Cheryl Morenz and now continues with Brandon Herwick, Sarah Pulcher, Amandalynn Andrasy and Thomas Trainor.

adult sits on floor talking to four studentsBefore the big race, the group hosted elite athlete Allie Kieffer, who was participating in the Freihofer 5K (3.1 mile) race. Kieffer spent time with the Wackadoodles and shared her running story during special assembly for students K-5. She spoke to the students about being a young runner, overcoming challenges and being her best self.

Kieffer went on to finish fourth out of a field of nearly 4,000 runners at this year’s Freihofer’s race with a time of 15:55.
