      4. Freshwater organisms generally restricted to that habitat    
   B. Ponds and Lakes Subdivided into Three Zones
      1. Littoral zone: shallow waters along edge of land
      2. Limnetic zone:  top layer of open water
      3. Profundal zone:  deep-water areas with no light penetration
   C. Large Lakes Exhibit Thermal Stratification          
      1. Summer conditions
         a) Upper epilimnion layer
         b) Lower, cooler hypolimnion layer
         c) Layer of temperature change called thermocline
      2. Fall conditions
         a) Epilimnion temperature drops; layers mix
         b) Called fall overturn
      3. Winter conditions
         a) Water most dense at 4% C, thus cooler surface water freezes
         b) Water below ice remains between 0% and 4%
      4. Spring conditions
         a) Water warms and mixes with cool water below
         b) Called spring overturn
   D. Lakes Divided into Two Productivity Categories
      1. Eutrophic lakes
         a) Abundant minerals, organic matter
         b) In summer oxygen is depleted below the thermocline
         c) Overturns redistribute nutrients and oxygen
      2. Oligotrophic lakes  
         a) Organic matter and nutrients relatively scarce

   A. Climatically Delineated          
      1. If earth`s surface were uniform, bands would be formed

   B. Tropical Rain Forests            
      1. Richest biome in terms of number of species
      2. Great diversity of life forms in well-lighted upper regions
         a) Epiphytes in tree branches
         b) Vines characteristic of tropical forests
         c) Hemiepiphytes begin as epiphytes, later grow roots into soil
      3. Life forms highly specialized and unusual
      4. Substantial rainfall throughout year
      5. Composition of soils
         a) Frequently acidic
         b) Deficient in phosphorus, potassium and other nutrients
         c) May contain toxic levels of aluminum
      6. Most nutrients concentrated in trees and other life forms
      7. Fragile regions readily damaged by human populations
         a) Cleared land does not sustain continued agriculture
         b) Increased populations cannot be supported
         c) Cleared forests take decades to recover
      8. Destruction accompanied by loss of vast diversity of life
         a) Organisms of great scientific interest
         b) Potentially important to the quality of human life
   C. Savannas                                              
      1. Reduced rainfall with prolonged dry seasons
      2. Open grassland with scattered shrubs and trees
         a) Trees generally deciduous and lose leaves in dry season
         b) Constitution maintained by periodic fires
      3. Nutrient-poor soils are especially high in aluminum
      4. Wider fluctuations in temperature than rain forests
      5. Characteristic large grazing mammals
      6. Widespread in North America during Pleistocene Epoch
   D. Desert                                                  
      1. Extremely low rainfall
      2. Concentrated within continents and at 20 to 30% latitudes
      3. Greatly fluctuating daily temperatures
         a) Extreme heat during day
         b) Rapidly radiate heat at night, may drop 30% C
      4. Sparse vegetation, primarily annual plants
         a) May pass dry season in form of seeds
         b) Germinate and grow rapidly after rainfall
         c) Trees and shrubs exhibit deep root systems
         d) May be deciduous or evergreen
         e) Convergent evolution:  unrelated organisms appear superficially similar
         f) Succulents common, exhibit CAM photosynthesis
      5. Animal life may limit activity to specific seasons
         a) Possess unique adaptations
         b) Live in moist, deep burrows and emerge at night
         c) Exhibit water-resistant cuticles and exoskeletons
         d) May estivate to avoid hot, dry conditions
   E. Temperate Grasslands           
      1. Common in interior of Eurasia, South America,and pre-colonial North America
      2. Highly productive when converted to agriculture due to rich soil
      3. Grasslands with long, cold winters
      4. Variety of plant forms dependent on rainfall
         a) Tall-grass prairies with moderate rainfall
         b) Forests with abundant rainfall
         c) Short-grass prairies with lower rainfall
            (1) Sensitive to overuse
            (2) Mismanagement results in desert formation
      5. Populated by herds of grazing mammals
      6. Maintained by grazing and periodic fires
   F. Temperate Deciduous Forests               
      1. Exemplified by forests of Eastern U.S., Canada, Eurasia
      2. Life forms changing with climatic conditions
         a) World climate becoming cooler, drier and more seasonal
         b) Eastern North America resembles western China
      3. Moderate rainfall
         a) Distributed throughout seasons
         b) Moisture not available during cold winters
      4. Many areas possess rapidly growing perennial herbs
   G. Taiga                                                    
      1. Northern coniferous forests of Eurasia and North America
      2. Long, cold dry winters with most precipitation in summers
         a) Deep blanket of snow in winter
         b) Protects ground from freezing, allows for growth of forest
      3. Changes in day length as a result of latitude
         a) Short days in winter
         b) Long days in summer
      4. Rapid plant growth in summer months
         a) Willows, birches common around lakes and marshes
         b) Alders with nitrogen-fixing bacteria inhabit infertile glacial soils
      5. Variety of animal life
         a) Large mammals:  elk, moose, wolves
         b) Small mammals:  rodents
H.Tundra                                                                                                              
      1. Farthest north, excluding regions of permanent ice
      2. Extremely uniform appearance
      3. Types of vegetation
         a) Small trees around open water
         b) Mostly grasses, sedges, heathers and lichens
         c) Grow rapidly in summer months
      4. Very low precipitation
      5. Water sits on frozen ground in summer
         a) Permanent ice, permafrost near surface
      6. Various animal life, especially during short summers
VI. Other Biomes
   A. Chaparral                              
      1. Found in Mediterranean area, California, central Chile, South African Cape, southwestern Australia
      2. Consists of evergreen shrubs and low trees
      3. Climate dry in summer
      4. Predisposed to control of growth by fire, needed for some seeds to germinate
   B. Polar Ice                               
      1. Ice caps at north (Arcti         c) and south (Antarcti         c) poles
      2. No precipitation, fresh water scarce, life limited to coasts
      3. Only bacteria, algae, small insects in Antarctic interior
   C. Mountain Zone (Alpine)          
      1. Same temperature and moisture as northern latitudes
      2. Wind swept vegetation similar to tundra, few trees
      3. Most growth in summer
   D. Temperate Evergreen Forest  
      1. Occur where winters are cold, definite dry season
      2. Examples:  western U.S. pine forests, California oak woodlands, Australian eucalyptus forests
   E. Warm, Moist Evergreen Forest              
      1. Occur where winters are mild, rain is plentiful
      2. Examples:  central China, south-eastern U.S. pine forests, northern California coastal redwood forests
   F. Tropical Monsoon Forest       
      1. Occur in tropics at higher latitudes or drier climates than rain forests
      2. Trees are deciduous, lose leaves in dry season
      3. Rainfall seasonal, from very wet to nearly drought conditions
   G. Semidesert (Tropical Dry Forest)          
      1. Occur in tropical regions with less rain than monsoon forests, but more than savannas
      2. Also known as thornwood forests
      3. Brief rainy period of growth followed by long dry period with no growth
