II. A GROWING POPULATION
   A. Historical Perspective
      1. Earliest fossils from Europe are 500,000 years old
      2. Humans spread to North America 12,000 years ago
      3. Population 10,000 years ago was only 5 million
      4. With agriculture, populations rapidly expanded
         a) More dependable sources of food            
         b) Development of towns and cities
      5. Bubonic plague in 1348 killed nearly four-fifths of population             
      6. Recovery and increase to 500 million by 1650
      7. Seventeenth century Renaissance renewed interest in science
      8. Scientific developments led to Industrial Revolution
   B. The Present Situation
      1. Global birth rate for last 300 years:  30 per year per 1000 people
      2. Present rate decreased slightly to 25 per 1000
         a) Decreased death rate to 9 per 1000 people per year
         b) Net increase in annual population rate
      3. Population increasing at rate of 1.6% per year

   D. The Prospects for More Food
      1. Must increase productivity of current crops

      3. Improvement of strains via Green Revolution:  1950-1970
         a) Ten-fold increase in Mexican wheat production
         b) Food production in India outpaced population growth
         c) China became self-sufficient in food production
      4. Limitations of Green Revolution
         a) Agricultural techniques require great energy output

IV. Our Impact On The Environment
   A. Nuclear Power
      1. Chernobyl incident

         b) Released over 100 megatons of radioactivity
            (1) Millions of times greater than Three Mile Island
            (2) Significant human exposure to radiation

      2. The promise of nuclear power
         a) Fossil fuels no longer cheap sources of energy
            (1) Nuclear power could provide new source
            (2) Undesirable side effects to burning fossil fuels
            (3) Produces sulfur and carbon dioxide
         b) New problems associated with nuclear power
            (1) Safe operation of power plants
            (2) Disposal of radioactive wastes
            (3) Safe decommission of power plants
            (4) Prevention of terrorism and sabotage
         c) Important to develop other alternative energy sources
   B. Carbon Dioxide and Global Warming
      1. CO2 in atmosphere maintains world temperature 25% higher than without it
         a) Traps heat-producing infrared light
         b) Creates greenhouse effect
      2. Associated with increased energy use
         a) Most gas from burning of fossil fuels
         b) Burning of forests also increases atmospheric gas
      3. Global warming results from increased CO2

      2. Water pollution
         a) Not enough water to dispose of wastes
         b) Detergents increase algae, decrease water quality
      3. Agricultural pollution
         a) Widespread use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers              
         b) Toxic chemicals remain in ecosystems
            (1) Chlorinated hydrocarbons banned in U.S.
            (2) Concentrate in the food chain
      4. Must develop responsible attitude toward use of chemicals
   E. Acid Precipitation
      1. Sulfur compounds produced when coal burned      
         a) Mixes with atmospheric water to produce sulfuric acid
         b) Acid dispersed by winds high up in atmosphere
      2. Effects seen far from where acids are produced
      3. Biological consequences
         a) Death of thousands of fresh water lakes  
         b) Seepage into groundwater

      4. Expensive to capture and remove emissions
   F. The Ozone Hole
      1. Visible to electronic equipment over Antarctica     
         a) Hole is nearly the size of the U.S.
         b) Thinning of ozone layer first appeared in 1975
         c) Presence of hole coincides with Antarctic spring
      2. Cause of ozone hole attributed to chlorofluorocarbons (CFC's)
         a) Chemicals used in cooling, fire extinguishers and styrofoam
         b) CFC`s reduce O3 ozone molecule to O2 gas

         d) Problem will get worse because of quantity currently in lower atmosphere that will reach upper atmosphere in later years
      3. Biological consequences
         a) Increased ultraviolet light penetration

   G. Destruction in the Tropics
      1. Traditional method of shifting agriculture            
         a) Crops grow for only a few years in poor soils

         d) No longer sufficient for even traditional manioc crop
         e) Dead materials collected for firewood, not recycled
      2. Forests being cleared at too great a rate
         a) Equal to the size of Indiana per year
         b) At the present rate they will be gone in thirty years
         c) Need to change from one-use to continuous agriculture            
H.The Loss of Biodiversity
      1. Serious and rapidly accelerating problem
         a) Given the loss of species of known plants and animals
         b) Given the loss of habitat, especially in tropics
         c) Calculate loss of 20% of biodiversity within in next 30 years
         d) Loss greater considering we have named only 15% of world's eukaryotic organisms
      2. Loss important for several reasons
         a) Moral, ethical and aesthetic grounds
         b) Organisms necessary to sustain our own existence
            (1) Opportunity to study them lost
            (2) Also lose potential benefits of these organisms
         c) Upset balance of living communities and their physical environment
            (1) Effect soils, water regulation, nutrient cycles, atmosphere and climate, absorb pollution
            (2) Creating conditions of instability and unproductivity
      3. Little known about overall ecology of communities and ecosystems
         a) Cannot replace with systems that will support humans
         b) Damage is currently irreparable

   A. Attempts to Find Solutions to Environmental Problems
      1. Studied by environmental scientists
      2. Applied science associated with ecology, geology, meteorology
   B. Environmental Problems Can Be Solved  
      1. Assessment
         a) Gathering information
         b) Construct model of situation
         c) Use model to predict future events
      2. Risk analysis
         a) Analyze environmental impact
         b) Evaluate potential for solving problem
         c) Determine adverse effects of solution
      3. Public education
         a) Address problem in terms the public can understand
         b) Present alternative actions
         c) Explain costs and results of various choices
      4. Political action
         a) Choice made through elected officials
         b) Difficult to implement if multinational problems
      5. Follow-through
         a) Monitor results of environmental actions
         b) Evaluate and improve initial analysis and modeling
VI. What Biologists Have To Contribute
   A. Environmental Problems Require Applications of Biological Principles
      1. All living things need to use energy of the sun
      2. Need to understand basic principles and their applications
      3. Some areas of world are experiencing the future`s problems now
   B. Scientific Education Is Necessary for Informed Decision Making
