(Nov. 28, 2011) On Nov. 16, Universal Pre-K and kindergarten students from Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School came out with their families to enjoy an evening of literacy! The “Rhyme Time Literacy Night” focused on integrating nursery rhymes throughout the curriculum with science, movement and music activities.
Students practiced writing their names and jumping over a candlestick like “Jack Be Nimble” and sequencing the nursery rhyme “Hey Diddle, Diddle” to build literacy skills. They also created night sky pictures with “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and climbed a hill like “Jack and Jill.”
Parents and students enjoyed an “Itsy Bitsy Spider” snack that they made themselves, and a station where they decorated a photo frame after having their pictures taken as “Old MacDonald.”
The evening was a collaborative effort of classroom teachers, a teaching assistant, several reading teachers, the music department and Acting Principal Karen Miller. Thank you to all who participated in the evening!
