Elementary bus
routes incorrect in Chalkboard newsletter
(Aug. 31, 2010) The bus routes in the August
Chalkboard newsletter for AWB and PBC are incorrect. Unfortunately
the printed schedules did not take into account the 9:00 a.m. starting
time. A letter is being sent home to parents today to inform them of the
error. We apologize for any confusion this may have caused. Access the

Fall Continuing
Education course booklet has mailed
(Aug. 31, 2010) RCS's Fall Continuing Education course
booklet was mailed to residents Aug. 27. The program offers more than 35
courses. In-person registration is Monday, Sept. 13 from 6:30-8:00 p.m.
in the Aquatics Center. Download the

New York wins
nearly $700 million in 'Race to the Top' competition
(Aug. 24, 2010) The U.S. Department of Education today
announced that New York State has been awarded nearly $700 million as a
winner in the second round of the federal Race to the Top competition.
RCS will wait for news on how the money will be used to help local school districts, said Superintendent Daniel Teplesky.

Yearly pool pass
now $30
Registered pool users requested to re-register by Sept. 30 for new
pass
(Aug. 24, 2010) Under the state's rules and regulations of a contingency budget in which the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District is operating under for 2010-11, the district is required to charge fees for the use of its grounds and buildings, which includes the pool. RCS will charge a yearly pass fee of $30 per non-student who wishes to use the pool. Community members who are currently registered to use the pool are asked to re-register for the new pass by Sept. 30.

Board honors six
faculty and staff members who retired in August

(Aug. 23, 2010) Six members of the RCS school community
who retired in August were honored by the Board of Education on August

(Aug. 5, 2010) Students planning to participate in the
fall sports program must have an updated physical.

SED to keep
January Regents exams, cut other exams due to state budget cuts
(Aug. 5, 2010)
The New York State Education
Department said this week it will not eliminate administration of
Regents exams in January, 2011, but will continue with its plan to do
away with assessments in other subject areas this school year due to
state budget cuts.

Reduced Price Meal information and application available
(Aug.
4,
2010) Parents of RCS students are invited to complete applications for
their children to receive free or reduced price meals during the 2010-11
school year. Those parents who have previously qualified for free or
reduced price meals must complete and submit an
application for the new
school year. Benefits from the last school year end Sept. 30th so please
apply now.

NYS assessments
and the new "cut scores"
(Aug. 3, 2010) Like many school districts across New York State,
RCS’s 2009-2010 grade 3-8 ELA and math assessment scores were lower
based on New York State’s new scoring procedures. Despite lower scores,
RCS Superintendent Daniel A. Teplesky wants to assure the school
community that students are making progress.

Board appoints
Brian Bailey as RCS High School principal
(July 22, 2010) The RCS Central School District has selected
Guilderland High School Assistant Principal Brian Bailey as the next
high school principal, effective August 20.

District Office to
relocate to Village of Ravena Offices
(July 22, 2010) At its July 20 meeting, the RCS Board of Education
approved the relocation of the district office from the building at 26
Thatcher St., Selkirk, to the Village of Ravena Offices, 15 Mountain
Rd., Ravena.

re-elected board leadership
(July 6, 2010) Scott Hughes and Jeff Sorensen were re-elected to the
offices of president and vice president, respectively, of the
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk School District Board of Education on July 1,

(June 30, 2010) Twenty-six members of the Class of 2010 have been

honored for years of service
(June 8, 2010) Fourteen members of the RCS school community who will
retire at the end of the school year were honored by the Board of
Education on June 7.

SABIC volunteers beautify Pieter B. school gardens
(May 24, 2010) Volunteers from SABIC spent the morning of May 19
beautifying the grounds and gardens at Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary
School.

School Board approves contract extension with CSEA unit
(May 20, 2010) The RCS Board of Education approved a renegotiated
contract that provides a two-year extension with the RCS CSEA Unit 6005
at the board's May 17 meeting. Concessions include a step freeze and
co-pay provisions of the prescription drug plan.

Support for RCS greenhouse grows with support of community
(May 3, 2010) Plans for RCS' long-anticipated greenhouse project have
been gaining ground in recent months thanks to the generous support of
the community. The Board of Education's Buildings, Grounds and
Transportation Committee, which is overseeing the project, is seeking
volunteers and the remaining materials needed for the project.
