Students are invited to join RCS art teacher to celebrate Hudson's historic voyage with community sculpture project

(See below for update on May 6 community work session.)

During spring break, teaching artist Paula Vatalaro is working as the artist in residence at the Ravena Community Library. Kids in grades five or above, accompanied by parents or family members, may come to work together at the library each day. Kids and their family members will work with Vatalaro to build a sculptured anchor to commemorate the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson's voyage.

The project will begin on Monday, April 13th, and end on Thursday, April 16th. Fliers are available at the library. If you're interested, please call the library at (518) 756-2053 for the daily schedule.

After the basic form of the anchor is built, members of the library and school communities will prepare and design the surface.

The Anchor project will highlight history, commerce and community events dating back to Hudson's discovery of the great river.

Sculptured anchors of all kinds from all communities will be displayed during the Art on Lark 2009 festival in downtown Albany in May. The anchors will then travel to different locations and events throughout 2009 to celebrate Hudson's discovery.

UPDATE: FINAL CHANCE TO WORK ON THE ANCHOR ON MAY 6

This is the last week for students and community members to add the finishing touches to Ravena's Hudson Commemorative Sculpture. The final work session will be at the Ravena Library on Wednesday, May 6th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

ABOUT PAULA VATALARO

Currently, she is preparing two pieces to include in a show to be held in May at the Broome Street Gallery in NYC's SoHo district. She has continued to create art while teaching full-time at RCS.

This project is sponsored by the Upper Hudson Library System and is supported by Federal Library Services and Technology Act funds, awarded to the New York State Library by the Federal Institute of Museum and Library Services.
