How it all began
Stars
Intergen has been incorporated since 1997, but began as a
grassroots pilot program at the A.W. Becker Elementary
School in 1996 after receiving seed money from the New York
State Legislature. Since then, the STARS Program has
expanded from five to more than twenty senior volunteers at
the two elementary school buildings. Eight years ago, Stars
Intergen Inc. began offering a second program, Star Helpers,
for middle- and high-school students, an after school model
that brings students to the Van Allen Senior Apartments in
Glenmont where they interact with senior residents through
activities and field trips.
Stars Intergen Inc. also provides community service
opportunities for RCS high school students to assist and
interact with local senior citizens. For instance, our
agency collaborates with the Senior Projects of Ravena and
Bethlehem Senior Services to provide a monthly luncheon and
music program for area retirees. As part of that effort, the
high school sends two 12th graders to help out at each meal
by serving food, interacting with retirees and cleaning up.
