The MSSH Program
The MSSH Program is a collaborative effort between the RCS
Middle School, Stars Intergen Corporation and the Van Allen
Senior Apartments in Glenmont. The program enables middle
school students to develop meaningful friendships with older
adults. Participating middle school students are bused
weekly to the senior apartment complex where they socialize
with senior volunteers and team up with them on community
service projects.
The MSSH
students and senior volunteers hold drives to benefit local
nonprofits, such as an annual holiday drive for the food
pantry and a stuffed animal drive for nursing home
residents. They visit and perform community service at the
local food pantry, homeless shelter, VA Hospital and other
sites to learn about community needs and foster an interest
in community service among the students. These community
service activities help the students gain a better awareness
about the needs of others in the Capital District.
For the
2004-05 school year, the MSSH students and seniors also
visited the FBI headquarters in Albany to learn about the
Federal agency and to give the students ideas about career
opportunities for the future.
