The STARS Helper Program
The Star Helpers Program, formerly known as MSSH (Middle
School Star Helpers), is a collaborative effort between RCS,
Stars Intergen Inc. and the Van Allen Senior Apartments in
Glenmont. The program enables middle- and high-school
students to develop meaningful friendships with retirees.
Participating students are bussed two to three times a month
to Van Allen Senior Apartments where they socialize with
senior volunteers in the community room, do homework, crafts
and community service projects and play games. They also go
on field trips with the retirees to perform community
service, to learn about career opportunities, and to raise
their awareness about life beyond their school district.
Past field trips include the Albany City rescue mission,
regional food bank, Town of Bethlehem food bank and police
station, FBI Headquarters, Channel 6 TV station, Capital
News 9, the Dutch Apple Cruise, AquaDucks tour and the
Schenectady Planetarium and Museum.
