Why become a
STARS volunteer?
Today’s students face a myriad of pressures that impede
success in the classroom. Divorce, socioeconomic challenges
and peer pressure are just a few of the factors that can
distract children from their schoolwork and lead to poor
self-esteem, which can result in poor life choices and
prevent students from reaching their full potential. In
addition, many children no longer have grandparents living
close by who traditionally provided extra support and
continuity to the family unit.
Children need positive role models who will take the time to
listen to their concerns and encourage them to make wise
choices. It means a great deal to a child to know that
someone cares. STARS volunteers serve as grandparent mentors
who give students individualized attention and positive
encouragement, listen to them, help them with assignments
and boost their feelings of self-worth.
Please consider volunteering for the STARS or Star Helpers
Program if you enjoy children and want to:
-
help children succeed in school and develop
self-confidence;
-
have a meaningful volunteer experience and make a
difference in your community;
-
maintain an active lifestyle after retirement;
-
have a flexible schedule;
-
make friends of all ages; and
-
volunteer close to home to conserve on gas.
