What do
STARS volunteers do?
STARS
volunteers work directly in the RCS Elementary School
classrooms or in the school library with students to help
them master academic subjects. STARS work under the
direction of the classroom teacher who is always present to
answer questions and provide guidance to them. They receive
training and orientation before they enter the classroom and
ongoing support as needed.
STARS
volunteers:
·
Befriend students and serve as adult
mentors. Many children do not have older adults in their
lives and STARS volunteers provide emotional support that
may not always be readily available elsewhere.
·
Read to the children and encourage the
children to read to them.
·
Assist children in all subject areas and with
special projects as needed.
· Help children with homework assignments or
make-up work.
·
Give children individualized attention that
makes them feel special
·
Lead small groups of students working on
specific activities.
·
Share stories about their lives and careers
so children learn what life used to be like and how the
seniors persevered, particularly during difficult times such
as the Depression and World War II.
·
Help children discover that older adults are
fun to be with, and that the two generations have a lot in
common, and
·
Instill a greater awareness among the
children about “healthy aging,” that individuals of all ages
enjoy life and continue to give back to their community.
