STARS is an innovative, school-based intergenerational
program that brings retirees into the two RCS elementary
schools to help children succeed in school and develop
self-esteem. Our STARS volunteers serve students in
classrooms (Pre-K through grade 5) and after school homework
clubs where they provide individualized attention to help
children master reading and other subjects, always under the
direction of a teacher. Schedules are flexible depending on
the volunteer’s availability and the individual teacher’s
needs.
STARS volunteers:
-
Read to the children and listen to children read
aloud.
-
Assist children in all subject areas and with
special projects.
-
Assist children with assignments or make-up work.
-
Befriend students and serve as senior volunteers to
children who may not have adequate adult support
elsewhere and who may not have opportunities to interact
with senior citizens outside of the classroom.
-
Share stories about their lives and careers so
children learn what life used to be like, particularly
during World War II and the Depression.
-
Help children discover that seniors are fun to be
with, and that the two generations have a lot in common.
-
Instill a greater awareness among children about
“healthy aging,” that individuals of all ages can remain
active and enjoy life; and
-
Serve as role models who teach students by example
that community service should be a lifelong endeavor.
