On
November 4th we change our clocks from
Daylight Savings Time back to Standard Time. That
means many of our neighborhood children will be
traveling to and from school in the dark. Watch
carefully for children and be ready to react. Drive
at a safe speed for conditions.
There are many things we can do to help the kids in
our community stay safe.
First,
teach them Be Seen to be Safe. Bright
colored clothing or reflective gear (such as on a
backpack or jacket) reflects light so that motorists
can see them. The sooner a motorist can see them
ahead – the sooner they can react.
Second,
constant reinforcement that they should stop,
look left-right-left, and listen”, before
stepping off the curb or into the street even if
there is a traffic signal. Teach them that some
motorists don’t always obey the stop signs/red
lights.
Third,
never cross between parked cars. Always walk to a
crosswalk or clear area to cross.
Walk them to and from the bus stop whenever
possible. This may be the most enjoyable part of
your day!
