Literacy program addresses importance of reading, family and fun
A.W. Becker Elementary students received a special announcement from their ‘One School, One Book’ campaign for 2019. Joined by school faculty and administrators, students in pre-K through fifth grade found out the book they’ll be reading as a part of this year’s special campaign. For 2019, students, parents/caregivers and school staff will read Mr. Popper’s Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater. Students were also provided their very own copy of the children’s novel and are encouraged to share their reading experiences with family and friends.
As always at A.W. Becker, several staff members dressed in unison, as penguins, to cheer on the program and get the excitement level going for students and staff. Always a fan favorite, this year’s mascot was a penguin who danced with staff members, while high-fiving students at the assembly. Kick off successfully accomplished!
In addition, as part of this year’s reading program, A.W. Becker will participate in “Read for Ronald McDonald House.” This program allows students and their families, for one month, to track their reading minutes on their Ronald McDonald House reading calendar, while asking family and friends to sponsor their reading efforts. At the end of the ‘One School, One Book’ program, A.W. Becker students will gather their donations and submit their fundraising amounts to the Ronald McDonald House. The ‘One School, One Book’ reading campaign aims to encourage young readers through reading aloud at home and interactive activities at school. Click here for the A.W. Becker One School, One Book page.
Special thanks to everyone and let’s have a great time reading with family and friends!
