A.W. Becker students fight childhood cancer one math problem at a time

The kickoff for the 2016 A.W. Becker Math-a-Thon to benefit St. Jude Children’s Hospital happens March 30. Participating students pledge donations and solve math problems in a Math-A-Thon Fun Book developed by Scholastic Inc.

The Fun Books contain engaging activities that support national math standards that allow students to build and practice essential math skills covered in state standardized tests while also raising funds for kids battling cancer at St. Jude.

“The opportunity to be involved in the St. Jude Math-a-Thon gives our students the voice to say, ‘I’m going to make a difference and help someone just like me,’ while sharpening their math skills at the same time,” said Debra Neubart a math curriculum specialist at the school.

Students ask family and friends for donations in support of their participation in the Math-A-Thon. All donations are sent to St. Jude. The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk community can support the cause by making donations to St. Jude in honor of students’ participation. Donations can be made until Friday, April 15.

St. Jude is considered one of the world’s leading centers for research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other catastrophic childhood diseases. The institution develops and shares protocols and expertise to treat those deadly diseases.
