On Wednesday, January 27 Albany County Department of Health (ACDOH) officials announced that it will not approve the return of high-risk sports beginning on February 1. Albany County Department of Health, citing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will continue to monitor COVID-19 rates in the region prior to reinstating high-risk sports in area districts. According to county health officials, rates should be below four percent for seven consecutive days in a region before high-risk sports can resume. Please note that there has been no definitive date to allow high-risk winter sports to return this year.
For RCS District students, this means that Winter Sports, including boys and girls basketball, competitive cheer, and wrestling will be delayed until further notice pending approval from the Albany County Department of Health. The other Winter Sports of swimming and bowling will continue at this point. As a reminder, the Fall II season, which will include football and volleyball (high-risk sports) and boys and girls soccer and cross country (moderate-risk sports) are slated to begin on March 7, 2021.
In preparation for any future seasons, a valid sports physical from the 18-19 or 19-20 school year is acceptable, along with a sports update form that is available on our website. More information will be forthcoming for students and families once a determination about the Winter Sports Season has been made by the county.
