Budding middle school scientists compete at Science Olympiad

Two Science Olympiad teams from Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Middle School competed with other teams around the region at Goff Middle School in East Greenbush in February. While the RCS teams, made up of 27 students, did not qualify for the State tournament, RCS teacher Jennifer Fisk-Jaskolka said the teams had some impressive showings and some surprises.

Medals were awarded to:

  • Christian Price-Burnett and Leah White 4th in Disease Detectives and Jeremy Huntsman 6th in Disease Detectives also
  • William Miller and Nick Bonilla 5th in Dynamic Planet
  • Leah White and Max May 3rd in Ecology
  • Caroline Bullard, Elizabeth Baldes and Jeremy Huntsman 6th in Experimental Design
  • Ian Brisco and Ella O’Brien 4th in Herpetology and Jasmine Weidman and Maeve Newkirk 5th in Herpetology also
  • Nick Bonilla, Na’Sir Miller and William Miller 4th in Hovercraft and Caroline Bullard and Elizabeth Baldes 5th in Hovercraft also
  • Ashley Cross and Roberto Gonzalez 4th in Meteorology
  • George White and Aidan White 3rd in Microbe Mission and Caroline Bullard and Rhys O’Connell 6th in Microbes also
  • Gregory (Scotty) Brown and Christian Price-Burnett 3rd in Optics
  • George White and Izaak King 4th in Road Scholar
  • Christopher Price-Burnett and Ian Brisco 6th in Rocks and Minerals

Each event required a team of two individuals to prepare for a specific topic. Some pairs prepared by building and testing devices, others prepared by studying a topic in advance for either a written test component or a game show-like event.
