Continuing Education Classes Fall 2017

Registration for Fall 2017 Continuing Education courses will be held from 6:30-8 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 7. Take a look at the courses being offered this Fall.

Aquatics Courses


• Dates: Mondays-Fridays; Sept.-Feb.
• Time: 5:30-7:20 a.m.
• Location: Aquatics Center
• Fee: RCS residents – $110, Non-residents – $220

The morning swim program provides an opportunity for professionals and exercise enthusiasts in our community to fulfill their exercise needs.


• Dates: Nine-week session begins Sept. 11. Four-week
session begins Nov. 20
Classes meet Mondays.
• Time: 5-6 p.m.
• Location: Aquatics Center
• Fee: $75 for nine-week session; $32 for four-week

Pauline’s Aqua Animal Challenge is a total body workout that will be done in the shallow area of the pool. You will move to the sounds of all types of motivating music including a few pulsating Latin rhythms that Pauline has put together for you so that you will have the time of your life while getting a great workout. We will shake those hips, stomp those feet, kick up those heels like never before. The impact is low yet you will burn more calories than on land because of the resistance of the water. This water exercise program is designed to obtain optimum physical fitness.

Aqua Fitness is a moderate- to high-level aerobic workout, including a deep-water jogging segment. Water workouts allow participants to shed pounds and firm muscles, yet is easier on back and joints than high-impact aerobics. Registrants who sign up for just one night should indicate which night they will attend. The class is limited to 35 students. Participants are required to supply their own jogging belts.

We will have one hour of fun water aerobics to your favorite oldies tunes. Be prepared for lots of good clean fun, and get a great work out to boot. Because of their low-impact format, water aerobics classes are suitable for every age and fitness level, from beginning exercisers who would like to lose weight, through elite athletes. Some of the benefits of water exercise include: increased muscle strength, posture and balance; Enhanced sense of wellbeing, mood and sleep quality; greater mobility and flexibility of joints; improved endurance and fitness; eases stiff joints and relaxes sore muscles; reduced pain and fatigue. Participants should bring their own water shoes.

• Instructor: Jennifer Mapes, owner of Hoops by Jem

Hula hooping is a low-impact cardio exercise, that improves posture, flexibility and core strength. You can burn up to 420 calories during this one-hour class. No hula hooping experience is necessary. We will be hooping on the waist, hips and off-body while moving and dancing with the hoop. Hula hoops will be provided, but you are welcome to bring your own. Maximum of 25 students, ages 10 and up.

This class offers the opportunity to play volleyball with a competitive edge! This course is for those who enjoy volleyball and want a challenging workout. Newcomers welcome.

If you enjoy playing basketball but do not belong to a team, this class is for you. Teams will be formed at each class. Due to high demand, all participants MUST pre-register.

Have fun and exercise while learning the basic steps and movements to classic and new line dances. Partners are not needed, making this a wonderful opportunity to dance and socialize.

This course is for people who enjoy soccer. It’s a noncompetitive class that offers a night of exercise and fun. Newcomers are always welcome. Bring a white and dark shirt to each class for team designation.

Get a fun, low impact aerobic workout with Bellydance. Tone your arms and belly while increasing flexibility and strength. Enjoy this beautiful and wonderful ancient dance form. No dance experience necessary. Where comfortable clothes for movement. Taught by Bonnie Mion, professional dancer and storyteller.

Hula is a fun, low impact aerobic workout. Great for joints and flexibility. Enjoy the beautiful music and learn a simple hula dance. All ages are welcome. No Dance Experience necessary! Wear comfortable clothes for movement.

Career Training

This introductory class will explore the many aspects of voiceover work for television, film, radio and narration, as well as emerging opportunities for voice in multimedia. Participants learn how to prepare a demo tape and how to bypass the competition and get the job. Activities include listening to professional voice-overs as well as preparing and reading copy.

• Instructor: Alissa Mosier

In this six week course we will work on your basic behaviors such as sit, down, and stay, but also wait at the door, come and leash up, loose leash walking, polite meet and greets, and other life and social skills. Taught by Alissa Mosier, CPDT-KA of Old Dogs New Tricks, ( this course is based of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers “My Dog has C.L.A.S.S.” program. Mosier is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer through the Association of Professional Dog Trainers, an American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen Evaluator and a C.L.A.S.S. Evaluator.

This Class we will be covering Watercolor, acrylics and mixed media (which includes pencil drawing, pastels, texture medium and much more). This class is a step up from the beginner Watercolor held in the spring. However, if you did not take that course, don’t worry, you will be walked through all the steps. Suggestions and review accurate cutting, piecing and sewing your choice of pattern. Traditional or Contemporary. Apply your skills and learn the steps to make a fabulous quilt. You will be happy and proud of your new learned skills and your beautiful quilt!

Driving Courses

• Instructor: Adirondack Driving School

This course is required of all drivers prior to taking the New York state road test. Students must have a valid New York state driver’s permit to enroll and must bring it to class. Class is limited to 36 students.
