Racey claims 2020 NYSPHAA Indoor State Title

RCS senior Shane Racey claimed the 2020 NYSPHSAA Indoor Track & Field Championships state title in the pole vault. Racey set the mark with a 16’2” vault at the state championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.

Racey set the mark with a 16’2” vault at the state championships at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y. Racey competed against the top 30 pole vaulters in the state. Since seventh grade, Racey has competed in track and field events in the RCS district. He credits his dad’s influence for his interest and success.

“Without a doubt, my dad has always been an influence for me in track and field. He has allowed me to participate in every aspect of track and field, while finding out what events matter to me most,” he said. “My coaches Brian Legget and Alfonso Scannapicco have also helped me improve and gain confidence as a competitor. My mom has also been an important influence and her support has been invaluable. There are so many people to thank, from coaches, teammates and friends that have made my experiences in competition so important to me.”

Next up for Racey? He will be competing at the 2020 New Balance Nationals Indoor at the New Balance Track and Field Center at The Armory in NYC, set for Friday-Sunday, March 13-15, 2020. In that competition, he will compete against student-athletes from 40+ states and Canadian provinces as they seek to compete for titles and All-American honors.

Racey will be attending Cornell University in the fall. He will continue his track and field pursuits in the school’s Division I program.
