Recently, RCS Middle School eighth graders researched career and educational opportunities through Naviance software. Students were able to review and identify areas of interest and begin thinking of their future. Students accessed the software platform which enables them to conduct specific research and is utilized as a learning tool that can enable them to view opportunities that might not have been known to them earlier.
According to their website, Naviance is a comprehensive college, career and life readiness solution that helps districts and schools align students strengths and interests to postsecondary goals, improving student outcomes and connecting learning to life.
“Naviance, a career and college search web-based platform, is a great way for students to create an online portfolio of their career and college interests,” said RCS School Counselor Stephanie Cook. “We worked in seventh grade on the Strengths Explorer and Career Cluster Finder, where students obtain a list of possible careers that match their interests and abilities This year, in eighth grade, we were able to dig deeper into the college search process and students were able to choose a career, a related major, and a college of choice. We have a lot of fun seeing them get excited about their future.”
The research and educational aspect of the technology is just the beginning for RCS Middle School students as they begin to define who and what they might become as they continue their educational pathway. If you have a student that is currently utilizing Naviance, please consider engaging them on their curiosity and assist them with critical questions and feedback on their research. You might be surprised to see where, when and how your student might be preparing their future course work and what they will share with you.
