Dear Pieter B. Families,
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary, welcome to a new school year! We are looking forward to a productive partnership with you to ensure our learners can achieve their highest potential. We recognize that in order to be successful in school, our children need support from both the home and school. We know a strong partnership with you will make a great difference in your child’s education.
For any school to be successful you must have focused goals. PBC is in the second year of focusing on building targets/goals. We exceeded our targets/goals in our first year! In short, in year two the targets/goals are to increase by 10 percent the number of students reading on grade level, increase by 10 percent the number of students with mastery on math concepts and increase positive referrals through our school-wide student support system P.B.I.S.
I am very excited to announce a major change to our school for the 2018-2019 school year: STEAM Station! STEAM is an acronym for Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Math. Over the summer, we were hard at work converting the Pieter B library into the brand new STEAM Station. Students in K-5 will rotate to the STEAM Station once per week for 45 minutes as part of their special schedule. They will be immersed in inquiry and hands-on exploration in our newly created Makerspace with resources such as a LEGO wall and movable tables with areas for collaboration. Students will have access to a 3-D printer and a green screen recording studio room, as well as the full bank of computers! They will still have the opportunity to check books out as they’ve done in the past. The STEAM teacher will be working with students to develop authentic projects and involve the community.
For the eleventh year Pieter B. will have a First Day Celebration parade on the first day of school (September 6th) for students in grades 1-5, starting at 2:00 p.m. We ask for all parents, families and friends to line Church Street and Main Street to North Clement Avenue to wave to your child as they celebrate coming back to school. After the parade, free ice pops will be provided by the RC PTO!!
Throughout the year, it is important to keep abreast of school events and policies. The Parent Informational Handbook which contains student Code of Conduct information, absent/tardy forms and the school calendar are among the many resources that can be found on our website. If you do not have internet access, a copy of all forms can be picked up at the school building.
As we move towards the start of the school year, take some time to talk with your child about their hopes, goals and expectations for First Day and the school year. Encourage your child to ask questions and to build positive relationships with classmates. Listen to your child and be a part of your child’s learning. Remember, you are your child’s first teacher.
Please consider joining the Pieter B. PTO as our students can greatly benefit from your involvement and contributions to the school’s program and its operations. PTO is seeking volunteers to help with the following activities:
- Teacher-led instructional support, usually in the classroom
- School-wide events and activities
- Student recognition events
- Outreach and recruitment of parent and community volunteers
