Smoke the Dalmatian joined firefighters from the Coeymans Fire Company on Oct. 23, to help teach Pieter B. Coeymans Elementary School students a few lessons in fire safety.
Firefighters talked with students about fire prevention and fire safety practices, including “stop, drop and roll.” They demonstrated what a firefighter looks like in full turnout gear to help quell any anxiety students may have about the gear and mask and stressed the importance of having a fire escape plan at home.
“We practice fire drills so much at school that it’s second nature, kids know what to do,” firefighter Mark Deyo said. “They need to do fire safety drills at home, so that when there is an emergency, they won’t panic; they will get out where everyone knows where to find them.”
After the demonstrations, firefighters showed students their company fire trucks, answered questions, and finished the lesson by helping students climb into the trucks to get a firsthand look at all the bells and whistles.
