On Tuesday, May 20, fifteen students were inducted into the National Art Honor Society (NAHS) at RCS High School. Membership in NAHS requires students to demonstrate dedication to their artwork, maintain a B average or higher in art courses, and contribute positively to the classroom environment. Students must also complete at least one full credit of high school art and receive a recommendation from a visual arts teacher.
RCS NAHS members meet monthly, or more often when working on projects, to foster connections among students, faculty, and the broader community through the arts. This year, members took part in a variety of creative and collaborative initiatives, many of which involved younger students across the district.
During the ceremony, Vice President Kofi Opoku-Aning and Chair for Activities Sandra Guzman led a review of the year's accomplishments.
“This year has been extremely busy for the National Art Honor Society,” said Kofi. “We participated in a variety of events, all planned to help connect us with other students and our community.”
He spotlighted a new initiative - an informative video about the Pieter B. Coeymans Trout Program. “The goal of this project was to collaborate with the fifth-grade team and Mr. Powers to document the amazing work they do leading up to and releasing the trout. We visited their classroom and filmed them learning about the life cycle.”
Sandra reflected on the Art Acts of Kindness Project, which took place before Thanksgiving break. “We spent several 10th periods brainstorming uplifting messages and images to draw. We wanted people to know they were cared for and appreciated,” she said. “This was an amazing experience, and we hope to continue this project next year.”
At the end of the ceremony, the National Art Honor Society celebrated its graduating seniors by presenting them with the cords they will wear during their upcoming graduation. Miss Simmons led the introduction of the presentation of the cords. “This year’s graduating seniors were my first group of art students - Each of them holds immense potential, and I have no doubt they are destined to do remarkable things.”
Congratulations, National Art Honor Society Class of 2025! We look forward to the inspiring projects they embark on next year and to seeing how our members utilize art to form connections with other students and the RCS community!
Congratulations to all of the new members on this wonderful accomplishment!!
