For the past six weeks, 25 students from A.W. Becker in grades 3, 4, and 5 have been training to participate in the 15th Annual SaraLee Delightful 1 Mile and 3K (1.86 miles) Kids Run, which took place on Saturday, May 31.
To prepare for race day, students arrived early to school three mornings a week, and under the guidance of their coaches, Mr. Herwick and Miss McClave, they learned proper stretching techniques, how to pace themselves over longer distances, and strategies for building the mental stamina needed for distance running.
This fun and inspiring club was originally founded by longtime RCS physical education teacher Cheryl Morenz, who started the Wackadoodle Running Club to introduce students to the joy and discipline of running. A.W. Becker has proudly continued the tradition, keeping both the name and the club’s spirit alive. This year, the Wackadoodles were led by Mr. Herwick and Miss McClave, who supported their students every step of the way.
A big thank you goes to the AWB PTA for generously funding the club t-shirts and to Karen Waddingham for making the shirts! We are grateful to the event organizers, volunteers, and families who endured the rain to support us on race day.
Well done, Wackadoodles!
