Dear RCS Families and Community Members,
Our job at RCS is to prepare students for the world they will graduate into, not just the one they are growing up in. Artificial intelligence is already a part of that world, and it will only become more central to the careers, communities, and daily lives our students will navigate as adults. We have a responsibility to prepare them for it.
That is why the Board of Education is currently considering a new Artificial Intelligence Use Policy, now in its second read phase. This policy establishes a clear framework for how AI tools may be used in our schools, in ways that protect students, preserve academic integrity, and help develop the skills they will need going forward.
The proposed policy ensures that all AI tools are reviewed and approved before use in our schools, with student data privacy fully protected under FERPA and New York State Education Law Section 2-d. It sets clear expectations for students, including prohibiting the submission of AI-generated work as their own. It encourages teachers to integrate approved tools to enhance instruction, always with their professional judgment guiding the way. And it calls for age-appropriate AI literacy instruction so students understand how these tools work, their limitations, and how to use them responsibly. Our goal is for students t
o leave RCS as thoughtful, capable users of technology, not just consumers of it.

We strive to be a district where every decision puts students first. This policy is one more piece of that work, and I am thankful for your partnership.
In Service,
Craig P. Chandler
Superintendent
Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District
