Fourth-grade students at A.W. Becker Elementary hosted their annual Famous New Yorkers Wax Museum late last week. The event served as the culmination of a year-long study of New York State history, bringing together lessons from both English Language Arts (ELA) and Social Studies.
For this project, students researched influential New Yorkers who made significant contributions to our state and nation. From Revolutionary War leader Philip Schuyler to basketball legend Michael Jordan, and from women’s rights pioneer Elizabeth Cady Stanton to Olympic speed skating champion Bonnie Blair, students showcased the lives and accomplishments of notable figures connected to New York State.
Once their exhibits were complete, the fourth graders welcomed third-grade students and teachers to their museum. Visitors had the opportunity to meet these “living exhibits,” listen to student presentations, and learn about the remarkable individuals who helped shape New York’s history.
The annual Famous New Yorkers Wax Museum provides students with an engaging way to develop research, writing, and presentation skills while celebrating the people who have left a lasting impact on New York State and beyond.
