RCS Honors Ron Racey and Gary VanDerzee for Lasting Contributions to RCS Athletics

The Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk Central School District gathered with members of the RCS community on Friday, September 25, to honor two longtime contributors to RCS athletics, Coach Ron Racey and Gary VanDerzee.

The dedication ceremony, held at RCS High School prior to the varsity football game, celebrated the lasting impact Racey and VanDerzee have had on generations of RCS students, athletes, and families.

For decades, both Racey and VanDerzee have dedicated their time and talents to RCS. Through coaching, mentorship, leadership, and service to the school community, they have helped shape athletic programs and, more importantly, positively influenced the lives of countless students.

The ceremony provided an opportunity for the RCS community to recognize their contributions and reflect on the legacy they have both helped build.

“Last school year our Board of Education adopted a new policy establishing a formal process for naming district facilities,” said RCS Superintendent Craig Chandler. “In this case, both applications were recommended with much enthusiasm, and the board voted unanimously on both honors."

During the ceremony, both Racey and Vanderzee took the podium to share their reflections on this moment, each other as peers, and what it means to them to have these spaces named after them. After each spoke, the physical dedications were revealed. For Ron, it was the street sign for Racey Road and a plaque. For Gary, it was a plaque that will be affixed to the Concession stand welcoming visitors and the plans for the upcoming field replacement.

“I’m humbled and honored. Thank you to the RCS administration, board of education, and community members who decided I was worthy of this dedication,” said Racey.

The District extends its appreciation to Ron Racey and Gary VanDerzee for their many years of service to RCS. Friday's ceremony was an opportunity for students, colleagues, alumni, families, and community members to come together and celebrate two individuals whose contributions have left a lasting mark on RCS.

The evening continued with a win from the RCS Varsity Football team and an extended halftime program honoring all the fall athletes, bringing the school community together for another night of RCS pride.
