RCS is expanding opportunities for students to connect, compete, and build friendships through the introduction of Unified Sports, an inclusive athletic program that brings students with and without intellectual disabilities together as teammates. In its inaugural season, the district’s Unified Bocce team made an impressive debut, capping off its first year with a first-place finish in the end-of-season tournament.
Unified Sports is part of a movement to promote inclusion through athletics and brings students of all abilities together to develop teamwork, sportsmanship, leadership, and meaningful connections. Beyond competition, these programs help foster a school community where every student feels valued, included, and empowered to participate.
This fall, RCS introduced its first Unified Bocce team, welcoming 13 student-athletes to the program. All 13 players were new to the sport, making their accomplishments throughout the season even more impressive. The team included four seniors, three juniors, three sophomores, and three freshmen, bringing together students across all grade levels for a shared experience built on teamwork and school spirit.
Competing in the Southern Division of the Capital Region alongside Mohonasen, Bethlehem, Albany, Guilderland, Shaker, and Colonie, RCS joined a competitive section within an already established NYS Unified Bocce program. Over the course of five regular-season matches, the team demonstrated growth and learned a passion for the game.
One of the season’s most memorable moments came in an exciting 5–4 victory over Shaker, which featured two overtime wins. The team carried that momentum into the End-of-Season Tournament, finishing with a 5–1 record and earning first place. Along the way, RCS secured key victories over Ballston Spa and Hudson Falls, marking an outstanding accomplishment for a team in its very first season.
While the tournament title was a major highlight, the season’s success represents something even greater. For a group of first-year players who began the season with no prior experience in bocce, the team’s achievements reflect the encouragement and teamwork that defined their inaugural season.
RCS is excited to continue building on this momentum and expanding its Unified programming. Unified Bowling is scheduled to begin in January, and Unified Physical Education is offered as an elective at the high school and Middle School, providing additional opportunities for students of all abilities to participate.
Beyond athletics, RCS students are also embracing opportunities for inclusion and leadership. In November, 17 RCS students will attend the Capital District Youth Summit, a student-led conference that brings together youth with and without intellectual disabilities to collaborate, develop leadership skills, and advocate for people of all abilities.
As RCS continues to grow its Unified programs, the inaugural Bocce season serves as a wonderful reminder that the greatest victories extend beyond the scoreboard. Congratulations to our Unified Bocce team on an outstanding first season!
