On Tuesday, November 3, RCS second graders celebrated Election Day with a fun, hands-on lesson in democracy, heading to the polls to cast their votes for their favorite cookie candidate!
At Pieter B. (PBC), students started off the activity by learning facts about the candidates, Milano Chocolate Cookie and Chocolate Chip Cookie, and discussing the qualities that made each one a strong candidate. The lesson gave students an engaging opportunity to explore how elections work, the importance of making informed choices, and the difference between facts and opinions in campaign information.
A few miles north, second graders in Ms. Valentin's class at A.W. Becker Elementary (AWB) held a cookie election of their own, choosing between candidates Chocolate Chip Cookie and Oreo Cookie.
To experience the voting process firsthand, students completed voter registration forms, signed in at the polls, and reviewed campaign materials for each candidate before heading to the ballot box to make their final selections. Teachers noted that students took their roles as voters seriously, demonstrating respect, focus, and excitement throughout the experience.
Through these fun, interactive lessons, RCS second graders discovered that elections are about more than simply choosing a winner. They are also an opportunity to think critically, share opinions respectfully, and participate in a process that helps shape our communities.
All cookies ran great campaigns and earned a spot at the victory party, where students enjoyed them during snack time!
