AWB First Graders Launch Pet Food Drive to Learn About Community Helpers

First graders at A.W. Becker Elementary recently turned their learning about community helpers into action by organizing a pet food donation drive for local animals in need.

As part of the project, students created colorful posters to encourage participation, and families, along with the broader school community, responded enthusiastically. Together, they filled six large boxes with pet food and supplies for a local animal shelter!

The effort and lesson came to a conclusion in a special visit from Homeward Bound Rescue, who brought along some adorable puppies and spoke with the students about pet adoption and fostering. The visit helped students see firsthand how caring for animals is another important way to serve the community.

Teachers and staff celebrated the students’ hard work, emphasizing how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. “Our students are learning that being a community helper can take many forms, from helping people to helping animals,” said Ms. Miller.

The drive was a fun and meaningful way for Becker's first graders to connect classroom learning to real-world action, fostering empathy, responsibility, and a sense of community in young learners.
